Straddling a picturesque semicircular bay, the small Mexican port of Acapulco first came to the attention of well-to-do tourists following a visit by Edward, Prince of Wales in 1920.

Foreign investment came next, and roads and hotels popped up as the town’s population ballooned from under 5,000 to 50,000 in just a couple of decades.

In the 1950s, the city was still too expensive*for the average tourist*to visit. It acquired a reputation as the exclusive destination of Hollywood elites, including Elizabeth Taylor and Frank Sinatra.
