Foreign investment came next, and roads and hotels popped up as the town’s population ballooned from under 5,000 to 50,000 in just a couple of decades. In the 1950s, the city was still too expensive*for the average tourist*to visit. It acquired a reputation as the exclusive destination of Hollywood elites, including Elizabeth Taylor and Frank Sinatra. These promotional photos from the early 1950s show models enjoying the many pleasures of the still-small resort town, decades before the emergence of a skyline dominated by massive hotel towers.
