The favelas, or slums, of Rio de Janeiro have had a lot of bad press in the run-up to the Olympics. We've seen stories of violence, gun battles and ***ual assault. Still, the view from outside is generally worse than from within.

There's a huge amount of **n-violent daily life just going on in the sprawling shanty towns surrounding the Olympic venues, and plenty of areas worth exploring. Until recently, however, they've **t even been on the map — literally.

A mere 0.001 per cent of the city's favelas appeared on maps — and with one in five Rio residents living in them, that meant 1.4 million people had ** address to list on job applications or bank accounts, Google says. Read more...
