There are some people who will tell you Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys is the best album in history. These people are wrong. There are others who will default to the most common choice, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. These people are closer — they have the right group, at least — but they are still wrong.*

The greatest album in history, by the greatest group in history, is the one that came out a year before Sgt. Pepper and a few months after Pet Sounds. The one that was released 50 years ago on August 5 1966 (but criminally, never released in the U.S. in complete form until the 1980s). It is less flashy than its successor, less pretentious.
