Imagine waking up, hoping to do a spot of gardening in the backyard, only to find a massive hole is eating it up.

A sinkhole has opened up in a backyard in Ipswich, a suburb of Queensland, Australia. It was discovered on Tuesday morning by the next door neighbours of Lynn and Ray McKay, who alerted them to the gradually-opening hell mouth on the McKay's property.

"I come out and I've got a hole in the ground, it was only a little one, a metre, and it's just got bigger since," Ray McKay told ABC News. The hole has since opened up to eight metres wide.*

According to the news outlet, the Department of Mines have been alerted due to a former mine shaft being located in the area, but it'll be a few more days until authorities can figure out what exactly is going on. Read more...
