On the Fourth of July, 1976, American punk band The Ramones had their own sort of Independence Day, playing their first truly successful concert outside of the New York scene.

The band had been formed two years earlier by four young men in Forest Hills, Queens. Drawing inspiration from Paul McCartney’s one-time use of the pseudonym Paul Ramon, all four*— **ne of whom were actually related*—*adopted the surname Ramone, and with it, new identities: lead singer Joey, guitarist Johnny, bassist Dee Dee and drummer Tommy.

The Ramones soon became regulars at CBGB, mesmerizing crowds with their loud, fast, brutal and brief performances. They also drew critical acclaim, and by April 1976 they were recording their debut album, the 29-minute-long Ramones. Read more...
