PEDO meeting told 6 hydropower projects advertised
 

PESHAWAR: Former chairman of Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) Shakeel Durrani has said that maximum hydel resources are being utilised in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to pull the country out of current energy crisis.

He was chairing the 13th meeting of the Board of Directors (BoD) of the Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organisation (PEDO).

Secretary Energy and Power Naeem Khan, Additional Home Secretary Shahidullah, Peshawar Electric Supply Company (Pesco) chief Anwarul Haq Yousafzai, Senator Nauman Wazir, Sardar Tariq, Younas Marwat, Ghulam Sarwar Mohmand, Shahid Sattar, Ruhail Akram and Chief Executive ******r of PEDO Akbar Ayub Khan and others attended the meeting, said an official handout.

The CEO of PEDO, Akbar Ayub Khan said to develop the local and foreign investment in the province, six hydropower projects have been advertised to offer in private sector for implementation.

These are Arkari Gol (Chitral) 99 MW, Naran Dam (Mansehra) 188 MW, Shigo Kach (Lower Dir) 102 MW, Gorban (Shangla) 21 MW, Batakundi (Mansehra) 96 MW, Nandi Har (Battagram) 12 MW. He said initially a very encouraging response has been received from investors. These projects will produce 518 MW electricity, he added.

The meeting was told that beside that 356 micro hydropower projects are being launched in 12 districts wherein some areas are still deprived of electricity while 37 micro hydel stations have already been completed.

The estimated cost of these micro hydel stations is Rs. 5.524 billion and these stations will be completed by the end of 2017. The numbers of these micro hydel stations are being increased up to 1,000 with the financial assistance of Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The CEO of the PEDO said that the organisation is also engaged in implementation of two solar projects wherein 5,650 houses will be set with solar panel system and 200 villages of KP will be electrified with solar energy.

Currently, he added, the construction work is in progress on six hydropower projects of about 214 MW which is the highest ever pace of work in the history of PEDO. By the end of current year three projects of 56 MW will start generation.

During the meeting PEDO’s management affairs were also discussed. The board unanimously approved the starting of construction work on 84 MW Matiltan hydropower project at Swat. Moreover, the construction work will be started soon on two more hydropower projects.

All the board members expressed their satisfaction over the progress of energy projects in KP.
