Kentucky Derby favorite Nyquist just made a perfect Run for the Roses

Nyquist, the unbeaten favorite at the Kentucky Derby, broke early, backed off for a beat and then charged outside — a perfectly timed and executed race — to win the Run for the Roses on Saturday in Louisville.

The three-year old champion thoroughbred from Kentucky, named for Swedish Detroit Wed Wings star Gustav Nyquist, is owned by John Paul Reddam, a Canadian businessman and former philosophy professor.

Nyquist was ridden by Mexican jockey Mario Gutierrez, who won the 2012 Santa Anita Derby, Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes aboard I'll Have A**ther, but then was forced by tendonitis to drop out of the Belmont Stakes. Read more...
