BELFAST, **rthern Ireland -- A year ago the Republic of Ireland made history, becoming the first country in the world to legislate for same-*** marriages, but across the border in **rthern Ireland couples are still waiting

"You’re standing with your face up against the glass at your counterparts in the South," says 30-year-old Shane Sweeney, originally from County Fermanagh

On May 22, 2015, 62% of people in the Republic of Ireland backed the extension of civil marriage rights to same-*** couples -- it was a bittersweet day for many in **rthern Ireland’s LGBTQ community.

"It’s a sign of the times when we’re taking social cues from the South," says Sweeney, pointing to the how the Irish Republic was once defined as a strikingly "Catholic Country" based on its religiously-infused laws and customs, particularly on social issues. Read more...
