In the summer of 1970, the United States was at a moment of deep disharmony, with a pervasive sense of national outrage surrounding the bombing of Cambodia and the Kent State massacre

Supporters of President Nixon decided to organize an “Ho**r America Day” rally for the Fourth of July, and enlisted comedian Bob Hope and evangelist Billy Graham to help.

Though the ostensible purpose of the gathering was to express a sense of national unity and patriotism, many felt it was little more than a pro-war rally.

When the 50,000-person rally kicked off on Independence Day, it was met by several thousand counter-protesters, who staged a "*****-in" and called for the legalization of marijuana and the end of U.S. military involvement in Vietnam and Cambodia. Read more...
