Though the ostensible purpose of the gathering was to express a sense of national unity and patriotism, many felt it was little more than a pro-war rally. When the 50,000-person rally kicked off on Independence Day, it was met by several thousand counter-protesters, who staged a "*****-in" and called for the legalization of marijuana and the end of U.S. military involvement in Vietnam and Cambodia.
