Last summer, I was sitting on a park bench reading Little Women — as you do on a warm day in July — when a man stopped by my side to offer a word of literary advice.

“Don’t be embarrassed. Stay strong.”

The comment caught me off guard.
  1. Any time a stranger talks to me in New York City, I am instantly suspicious. Safety first, folks.

The thing is, I wasn’t embarrassed to be reading Little Women, and I had **t considered the book to be particularly shame inducing until that moment.
