Tucked in the hilly region of Kodagu in the Western Ghats in southern India, SAI Sanctuary is remarkable **t just for being the first private sanctuary in India, but also for its story of how a barren land was transformed into a lush bio-diversity hotspot thanks to one couple.

The Save Animals Initiative as it is k**wn, was founded by Dr. Anil Malhotra and his Pamela in 1991. Malhotra, who was born and raised in India, had spent several decades working in the US, before he returned to India in the mid-1980s to look after his ailing father. The couple decided to shift to India, buying 55 acres of private land, which had turned barren.
