The entire Metro system serving Washington D.C., and parts of Maryland and Virginia will shut down for at least 29 hours beginning at midnight tonight for safety checks of electric cables, according to multiple local reports.

The closure of the system is expected to deal a blow to the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, which is home to the federal government.*Metro has never shut down except for weather-related causes since it began operations in 1976, officials said.
