Beware the omega blocks and atmospheric rivers of March.*

The weather pattern for much of the week is one that forecasters have **t seen before, or at least **t since March of 2012, when a somewhat similar pattern yielded somewhat similar results.*

There is record heat in the East, deadly flooding from an atmospheric river in the South, and heavy rain, strong winds and mountain s**w hammering **rthern California.

What is remarkable, and this illustrates a key tenet of the way the weather works, is that these weather extremes in disparate areas, separated by hundreds to thousands of miles, are all connected to each other, sharing a tie to a blocked jet stream pattern that has temporarily taken on the shape of the Greek letter omega.* Read more...
