Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders confront racial issues at Flint debate

Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders tiptoed through a minefield of racial issues Sunday evening, with both white candidates attempting to appeal to African American voters during their debate in majority-black Flint, Michigan.

CNN's Don Lemon highlighted Clinton's support of the 1994 crime bill which locked up "a generation of black men," before asking her "Why should black people trust you to get it right this time?"

The question itself got applause from the audience of Democrats and independent voters.

Clinton cautiously mentioned her support of the bill, said Sanders backed it as well, then pivoted to her current views that "mass incarceration" must end. Lemon wasn't ready to let her dodge, though, leading to a testy response from Clinton. Read more...
