Desperate to fly, he enrolled in aviation school and tried to join the U.S. Army Air Service, but did **t get a chance to get in the cockpit He worked for a time as a roughneck in the oil fields of the southwest, where he was was jailed for more than a year for armed robbery He finally got his chance to fly when he joined Burrell Tibbs’ Flying Circus as a parachute jumper, while continuing to work in the oil industry as his main source of income.
