Alejandro González Iñárritu is the third person to join that club, with a win for The Revenant*following 2015's Birdman. It's the first time in more than 60 years that a director has posted back-to-back wins.

Joseph L. Mankiewicz was the last back-to-back Best Director winner, for A Letter to Three Wives*(1949) and All About Eve (1950).
