</p> HE MAY no longer live round the corner, but Gerry Marsden was on hand to help supporters of the Florence Institute celebrate a آ£3.7m Lottery grant.
The money from the Heritage Lottery Fund will help regenerate the Grade II-listed Dingle landmark for the community.
The singer was one of hundreds of youngsters to use the Florrie when it was a boysâ?? club.
He said: â??It is great news to hear of the Florrie being restored and brings back many great memories for me.
â??It was where I learned to play the guitar and where our skiffle band started out.
â??I also remember being a member of the Florrie boxing team.
â??My brother Fred ran the table tennis team and won several trophies as a result. The Florrie was a place for kids to go, it was the centre of the community. I am sure the new Florrie can do the same and young people will learn a lot and be able to give something back.â?*
Florence Institute Trust chairman, Denise Devine, added: â??We hope to restore our beloved Florrie by summer, 2011, when she will once again become a thriving and vibrant hub in the south end of Liverpool.â?*
