</p>Janet Tansley catches up with new girl on The Street Holly Quin-Ankrah
WHEN Coronation Street actress Holly Quin-Ankrah starred in a Liverpool play she loved the city so much, she stayed.
The 22-year-old, whoâ??s currently getting Lloyd hot under the collar as lap dancer Cheryl, appeared in Our Day Out at the Royal Court Theatre last year.
â??And I just loved it so much,â?* she says. â??I stayed with my brother in the Georgian quarter having moved up from London and I had such a great time, I didnâ??t want to leave.â?*
So Holly, originally from Warrington, bought her own home in the city centre to continue her love affair with Liverpool.
â??I love the culture and how small the city centre is.
â??I love how you can walk everywhere and how friendly the people are,â?* she gushes. â??Thereâ??s always something going on, too, it was great to get Capital of Culture and they did so much with it.â?*
And the city is a far cry from the one she remembers from her childhood visits: â??Thereâ??s so much work been done, itâ??s just beautiful with a lovely, warm vibe.â?*
The latter description of the city could almost be one of Holly herself.
Bright and bubbly, sheâ??s fun loving and relaxed as she talks about her new role in The Street.
â??Itâ??s been a great storyline line to go into and thereâ??s lots of great stuff in store,â?* she teases.
â??There are so many twists and turns itâ??s exciting for me even to read the script but it wonâ??t be as straight forward as people would imagine. There are relationship woes coming up with Chris who sheâ??s with now and turbulent times ahead. Itâ??s certainly worth watching.â?*
Intriguingly Holly might play a lap dancer but itâ??s not something she would relish in real life.
She says: â??I know girls who do it as a job and thatâ??s great but Iâ??ve never fancied it myself. If youâ??re body conscious itâ??s not the best thing to do â?? and I am. Iâ??ve got a very large bottom.â?*
A big bottom? Hardly. But a big future, most definitely.
Yet Holly, who is maybe best known for her part as Karen Young in Grange Hill, has never been trained as an actress.
â??I didnâ??t go to theatre school, I was just lucky enough to work. I started when I was 14 in Grange Hill, filming in Liverpool, and I did that for five years.
â??Then I did bits and bobs of TV jobs before going into theatre, which I love. It seemed silly to give up work to study and Iâ??m fortunate to have never had much of a gap in between jobs.
â??As for theatre or TV, Iâ??m happy doing both though, it just depends on the role. Both are a learning curve. But Coronation Street is my first TV job after three theatre jobs and itâ??s a whole new ball game.
â??Itâ??s unbelievable and amazing to learn from everyone here. Everythingâ??s been brilliant and everyoneâ??s been lovely, on the Street and away from it. The recognition thing doesnâ??t bother me, itâ??s part of the job. Any attention has been nice, nothing too scary or unusual.â?*
Holly wasnâ??t too daunted about going to work with one of soap landâ??s most famous casts â?? â??to me itâ??s a job and I want to come in and learn my lines, and do a great jobâ?* â?? but what was a bit â??scaryâ?* was going to work on a programme that works so well. â??You are just trying to jump in and fit in.
â??Craig Charles who plays Lloyd has been brilliant, just perfect, holding my hand.
â??But it was bizarre when I went for the read through with Craig who I knew from Red Dwarf because I watched it as a kid and he was great.â?*
Holly still has ambitions to work on a film, but for the moment is happy to enjoy Coronation Street for as long as it lasts.
Away from TV Holly loves going to gigs, whether itâ??s to see her brother who is in a group called The Vanities, a glam rock band, or to music festivals.
â??I have a boyfriend who isnâ??t in the acting business.
â??Maybe Iâ??m growing up.
â??When Iâ??m not working I like to see him and catch up with my friends and family.
â??Other than that my plan is to have lots of fun.â?*
Like others, Holly has been getting behind the England boys in their quest for World Cup Victory in South Africa.
â??Iâ??m not the biggest football fan but I have been watching the World Cup. I do feel sorry for the goalie, Robert Green. What I love most about it is the way everyone gets behind them, thereâ??s a patriotic pride that joins people.
â??I would love to be more into football, but me and my friends just get together for a giggle, pretend to know whatâ??s happening and just cheer when they score.â?*
