</p> TWO decades after he first invented Alan Partridge and a decade since the character was last on screen, Steve Coogan is still getting mistaken for his alter-ego.

â??A lot of people do think heâ??s real because they call me Alan,â?* says Steve. â??People say, â??Alan, can I have your autograph?â?? and I go, â??Itâ??s Steve actuallyâ?? and they go, â??Yeah, all right Alanâ??.â?*

As 46-year-old Steve has arguably spent more time on screen as his best-known character, rather than as himself, itâ??s understandable his fans get a little confused.

And Cooganâ??s going to be spending a lot more time playing the bumbling broadcaster, with a film version in the offing as well as his recent escapades on Sky Atlantic, which continue on July 9 with a new six-part series, Mid Morning Matters: Special Edition.

The spoof radio show for North Norfolk Digital, which began life as a web series last year, sees Alan broadcasting for 20 hours a week and discussing the hot topics of the day, such as which condiment you would take to a desert island.

Coogan reveals why he decided it was time to don his Partridge persona again:

WHY DID IT FEEL RIGHT TO BRING HIM BACK NOW?

â??WHEN you do a comic character that has been so successful, you shouldnâ??t outstay your welcome. You should leave people wanting more and thatâ??s what [writer] Armando Iannucci and I wanted to do with Alan. Weâ??ve both been working on other things, which meant weâ??ve had a fallow period with the character.

â??We brought him back because we felt there was more mileage in him.â?*

HOW DOES MID MORNING MATTERS COMPARE TO Iâ??M ALAN PARTRIDGE?

â??I THINK the humour in Mid Morning Matters is superior to Iâ??m Alan Partridge because itâ??s much more concentrated. Itâ??s pared down and pure, and thatâ??s why I like it because itâ??s all about character. The cameraâ??s on Alan the whole time so you see every little thing he does with his eyes and his expressions – you can almost tell what heâ??s thinking. You can only do that if the characterâ??s been developed to a certain level. You can really play with the subtleties of the character and dig into the tiny nuances and gestures. Itâ??s like going back to basics.â?*

IS IT EASY TO SLIP BACK INTO? â??AS LONG as Iâ??m doing something else, too, I donâ??t mind doing Alan. If it was the only thing I did, Iâ??d probably find it a bit depressing.

â??Iâ??ve just shot a film with Michael Winterbottom where I play Paul Raymond, so as long as Iâ??ve got something like that as a counter- balance to Alan, Iâ??m happy.â?*

WHY DO PEOPLE VIEW ALAN AS A REAL PERSON?

â??THEREâ??S a lot of me in him. Thereâ??s a part of me thatâ??s a bit embarrassing and some of the things Alan says are things that I might think. But we obviously edit those thoughts. Alan doesnâ??t, he just says them.â?*

DOES THE SUCCESS OF THE CHARACTER EVER FEEL LIKE A CURSE?

â??IF YOU make a character thatâ??s very successful then, yes, it can be. I have to fight not to be typecast. I have to generate a lot of other work for myself as some people donâ??t see me as anything other than Alan.

â??You canâ??t have success without that side of it, but itâ??s a nice problem to have.â?*

Mid Morning Matters: Special Edition starts on Sky Atlantic on Monday, July 9
