Grand Theft Auto IV was suddenly removed from Steam in January with very little explanation. But the good news is that it’s heading back to Valve’s online store in April – albeit with a few differences, as owners will note when the coinciding update rolls out next month.
Firstly, the game will be renamed to Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition “wherever it is currently digitally available” and will include the Episodes from Liberty City DLC. Anyone that owns Grand Theft Auto IV or Episodes from Liberty City on Steam will see their installation updated and the name in their games library will change to reflect this. And despite the ‘Complete Edition‘ part of the name, if you don’t own the DLC, you won’t be magically granted access to it (unfortunately) – but you will still need to download the update.

If you’ve purchased GTA IV previously through this service, you’ll need to create a Rockstar Social Club account in order to update to the new game. There is some good news though, as current save game files will be compatible with the new version. If you want to read up on the details, you can find them here.
It all seems a bit of a mess, doesn’t it? The reason for the update – as well as the game’s removal from Steam at the beginning of the year – is apparently down to Microsoft pulling their support from Games for Windows Live, and the need to create an entirely new version of the game in order for Rockstar to continue selling it via places like Steam and their own launcher.

With Microsoft no longer supporting Games for Windows Live, it is no longer possible to generate the additional keys needed to continue selling the current version of the game.”
In other GTA news, you can now experience GTA V in full, first-person VR thanks to a player-created mod that lets you experience the story mode in its entirety – you know, providing you have a VR headset lying around. And if you’re hoping for news of the next instalment of the series, I’m afraid you’re out of luck; the recent financial filing that some thought pointed towards a confirmation that GTA VI was in the works actually turned out to be a bit of stretch, at best.
