It’s no secret that the upcoming next-generation consoles will be considerably more powerful than their predecessors. Naturally, this will more than likely lead to various established franchises looking better than ever before. In one of the first hints towards what the PlayStation 5 will be able to achieve, Sony used the popular Gran Turismo racing series to tease the future of 8K resolution.

But while higher resolutions sound great, Gran Turismo Sport producer Kazunori Yamauchi has said he’d rather see how far the team can push the limits of frame rates. Of all the kinds of games out there that would surely benefit from higher frame rates over better resolution, racing titles have to be near the top of the list, right?

“I think, display resolution-wise, 4K resolution is enough,” Yamauchi told GTPlanet in an interview this week. “In terms of frames per second, rather than staying at 60 fps, I’m more interested in raising it to 120 fps or even 240 fps. I think that’s what’s going to be changing the experience from here on forward.”

Both Microsoft and Sony have talked up 8K capabilities, as well as faster loading times, and while we can assume higher frame rates will be in the mix, it’s too early to talk specifics.

Yamauchi also touched on something I feel most of us already know. The leap between PS4/PS5 just isn’t going to be as substantial as previous generational leaps. There’ll be noticeable improvements, sure, but nothing that’ll blow our minds in quite the same way as the leap from the PS2 to the PS3, or even the original PlayStation to the PS2.

“Going from PS1 to PS2 there was a hundred times the performance difference between the two console generations,” he said. “An advancement like that is no longer possible.”

Personally, I’d be pretty happy with higher resolutions, better effects, and faster loading times, but I’m sure there are lots of other unexpected ways that those developing games for Xbox Series X and PS5 will surprise us.

As always, the success of a generation will ultimately depend on the games that are released for it, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
