</p>SHE made a promise to her gran on her deathbed that she would finally succeed in shedding the pounds so that she would be healthy for her children.
Now Joanne Hassall has kept her word having dropped four dress sizes in just 12 months.
Weighing 18 stones 4lbs at her heaviest, Joanne, 35, had always struggled with her weight but it was the sight of her grandma for the last time that gave her the wake-up call she so desperately needed.
The mum-of-three from Bootle says: “My nan was proud of me no matter what but my weight has always been a concern. She wasnâ??t conscious when I made her the promise that I would lose weight but I knew I had to do it for her.
“We were really close. I feel sheâ??s even supporting me now in her own way as every time Iâ??m having a down day I just think of my nan and it gives me the boost I need to carry on.”
Joanne, who has lost more then five stones since Florence Cooch passed away in February 2012, also pays tribute to the support sheâ??s received from her mum Linda.
“My mum and I are like best friends. Weâ??re never away from each other and whenever I move house she follows and moves house too so she can be near me.
“Weâ??ve had a lot to deal with over the years and we have always leant on each other for support.”
At the age of 13, Joanne lost her 17-year-old brother, John, after a long battle with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and Linda believes this was the catalyst which caused her weight to spiral out of control.
Linda, 59, who works as a support worker for people with mental health and learning disabilities, says: “When Joanne lost her brother she took it really badly and I think thatâ??s when her weight problems really started.
“John suffered from a muscle wasting disease and he was nine when he went into a wheelchair. When he was 16 he caught a really bad chest infection which he just didnâ??t recover from.
“After that it was just the two of us.”
Joanne, who was training to be a teaching assistant at St Johnâ??s Primary School in Waterloo before she fell pregnant with her third child, Millie, started comfort eating as a way to forget.
“When I was stressed I just wanted to eat. I remember it first started in high school and I would just come home and eat rubbish and it just continued from there,” says Joanne.
Her weight gain left Joanne feeling insecure and some days she felt too uncomfortable to even leave the house.
“I was a size 22 going into a size 24. When I left the house I would feel as if every one was staring at me and laughing too.”
A proud mum to Adam, 10, Ben, seven, and Millie, one, Joanne, who lives with her partner of 20 years Jon Chadwick, was also struggling to keep up with her children.
“I would go out with the kids for a walk and I would be exhausted. I just didnâ??t have the energy.”
Linda says: “Joanne has always been a brilliant mum but I have noticed a difference since sheâ??s lost the weight. Now she can run around and play with them whereas before she wouldnâ??t as she felt uncomfortable.”
One year after her nan passed away, Joanne is delighted that she kept her promise. The combination of Joanneâ??s determination and her mum Lindaâ??s constant support has meant that she can walk outside with confidence.
Joanne, who joined Slimming World at Star Of The Sea Club on Elm Road in Seaforth with her mum, says “I now weigh just over 14 stones. My aim was to be able to get into a size 16 and now I can.
“If I was going on a night out when I was big I would only ever wear black pants or jeans. Now I wonâ??t go out unless Iâ??m wearing a dress. Iâ??ve completely changed my style.”
Linda canâ??t believe the transformation of her daughter who now seems like a new woman.
“Iâ??m really proud of what sheâ??s achieved and she has worked really hard to get where she is now,” says Linda.
“And if my mum â?? her gran â?? was still alive she would be over the moon.”
