Tom Holland has opened up about how close Spider-Man came to leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Spidey’s cinematic rights holders Sony reached a new deal to keep the superhero with his Avengers pals in the MCU only after initially announcing plans to pull him out to join Venom in a new cinematic universe.
In a recent interview with MTV International, Tom revealed how Sony was planning to proceed with the Spider-Man franchise before a new deal with Marvel was agreed.
“The future of Spider-Man was really, really bright with Sony,” he insisted. “We had a really, really wonderful idea of how we could sort of transition into a Spider-Man without the MCU.

“[Sony’s] Tom Rothman and Amy Pascal were really confident they were going to do justice and make a film that was the calibre that Spider-Man requires.
“But that said, I’m really glad to be back in the MCU and to have the team back together because I kind of fell that’s where he belongs now.
“I’m really grateful that [Disney’s] Bob Iger and Tom Rothman allowed me to be a part of the process of bringing him home.
“It was a pretty cool experience and also the best bragging rights ever: I saved Spider-Man.”

Tom recently clarified some details about the famed phone call between himself and now-former Disney CEO Bob Iger that saved Spider-Man in the MCU, to deny that he was drunk at the time.
Spider-Man: Far From Home is available now on DVD, Blu-ray and digital download. A third Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland has a release date of July 16, 2021.
