</p>FORMER Mersey ferry the Royal Iris will be the subject of a new painting exhibition after capturing the heart and imagination of a French artist.
Lorraine Fossi became fascinated by the much-loved historic vessel, which has been languishing at a berth on the River Thames for more than a decade.
A number of plans for the boat â??- including turning her into a floating restaurant for trips up and down the Thames â?? have so far come to nothing.
Before being taken out of service the Royal Iris was a fixture on Merseyside for around 40 years, with a stage, dancefloor and cocktail bar.
Many acts from the Merseybeat scene, including The Beatles, performed aboard the vessel during river cruises in the 1960s.
Lorraine, whose studio is close to where the Royal Iris is now berthed, said: â??We have both washed up at the same place on the Thames. I see Iris almost every day – lonely, compelling, and beautiful.â?*
The fate of the Royal Iris inspired a series of paintings by Lorraine which will go on display at a London gallery in April.
Lorraine added: â??I donâ??t know what her fate will be. I wanted to give her a new journey as if transformed through my love and artistic vision.
â??Iâ??m very much into the sea and this is a series of abstract seascapes, re-inventing a new journey for her.â?*
Lorraine said she had extended an invitation to Sir Paul McCartney to attend the opening of the show.
An online petition â?? which has so far attracted around 3,000 signatures â?? has been set up to bring the Royal Iris permanently back to Liverpool. It was started by photographer Dave Wood, who was born and brought up in Liverpool and now lives in Luton.
He said: â??The Royal Iris is not loved in London and thatâ??s understandable. She appears to be in poor condition despite the good work carried out by the current owner.
â??She has no part in London’s maritime heritage and needs to be back on Merseyside where people care for her and recall the happy days when she sailed up and down the River Mersey.â?*
Mr Wood said despite the boatâ??s deterioration, she was still in â??reasonable nickâ?* and the owner had made efforts to clean her up.
