</p>A MERSEY Marine swapped his water company day job for training in the frozen Arctic Circle.

Craig Connor, 27, from Bootle, spent two weeks camping on the far north of Norway in sub-zero temperatures.

During his stay the Royal Marines reservist, who works as a manager for United Utilities, skied long distances in deep snow with a heavy rucksack and completed ice drills.

He finished the specialist cold climate training by jumping into a pool of icy water through a hole cut into a frozen lake.

Craig, who is part of Royal Marines Reserves (RMR) unit RMR Merseyside and is trained as a landing craft coxswain, said: â??My civilian career is very different to what I do with the RMR and this is my opportunity to try new things.

â??I joined the RMR for the challenge, the sense of achievement and the opportunity to try new things.

â??It has exceeded my expectations so far.â?*

Royal Marinesâ?? cold weather and mountain specialists have been sent to Norway for training since 1968.

Craig was based in Porsangmoen, situated at 70 degrees north and several hundred miles inside the Arctic Circle.

Even making a meal was a challenge during his training because water is frozen in the Arctic environment.

With dehydrated food rations and the only drinkable water stored in flasks both require the addition of water â?? generated by melting snow.

It is a time-consuming process and Marines must take shelter to prevent their body from succumbing to the cold.

Possible hazards include freezing injuries from touching a metal surface with bare skin or allowing fingers and toes to become cold for an extended period of time.

Adventure-loving Craig recently completed a course, which qualifies him to be in charge of a Zodiac inflatable or an Offshore Raiding Craft (ORC).

He said: â??This was one of the things that attracted me to the services and the amphibious nature of the Marines.

â??I have also competed in the Royal Navy Ski Championships in France and been on adventurous training in Bavaria.

â??It was a real challenge out in Norway, learning to survive in temperatures as low as minus 20.â?*
