Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare‘s long-rumoured battle royale mode looks to be more certain with each passing day. Just one week after developer Infinity Ward appeared to tease the mode’s massive map in an in-game cinematic, more details have emerged – including an intended release target.
VGC has heard from sources close to development that Activision is planning to release the battle royale mode in a matter of weeks. The current thinking is that we’ll see the mode – supposedly called Warzone – in “early March”. This would likely mean either March 3rd or March 10th, as Infinity Ward typically releases the bigger Modern Warfare updates on a Tuesday.
As everyone expected, the release of Warzone will replace the mysterious classified section that currently sits in the Modern Warfaremain menu. This redacted segment was added as part of the Season Two update last week, and was one of the reasons fans started to believe something big was coming. Looks like they were right.

Players will then have the option to “upgrade” to the full Modern Warfare experience. In addition, it sounds like players will be using the same battle pass as the main game, meaning all cosmetics and gear from the standard multiplayer modes will carry back and forth between the battle royale.
While Activision and Infinity Ward have yet to say anything about this rumoured mode, the supposed details of Warzone have been circulating for quite some time now. While Infinity Ward oversees development of the “core” Modern Warfare experience, it’s believed that Warzone is being worked on by Raven Software, the studio that typically offers support across all Call Of Duty titles.
It’s also been said that Warzone will support up to 200 players, and will offer solo, duos, and four-player matches. It’ll have a ping mechanic similar to Apex Legends, and will feature a massive map made of new and familiar locations. A player who seemed to glitch their way into the battle royale map last year discovered a number of exciting things, including the Gulag and a football stadium.

The idea seems to be that when a player is downed, they enter into the Gulag for a one-on-one match with another felled player. The winner gets to revive and rejoin the fray, which sounds pretty interesting.
It’s worth noting that while these reports certainly sound legitimate, we won’t know for sure until Activision and Infinity Ward confirm Warzone themselves. If this early March launch is accurate- which I believe it probably is – then we should hear something in the next few weeks… maybe even days.
