</p>A statue of a young Cilla Black is set to be sited outside the original entrance to the Cavern in Mathew Street.

The bronze sculpture is being funded by and donated to Liverpool by the late starâ??s three sons as a â??thank youâ?? for the cityâ??s support and affection after their mumâ??s death last summer.

It will be created by artists Emma Rodgers and Andy Edwards, and will be cast in Castle Fine Arts foundry in the Baltic Quarter.

Cillaâ??s sons Robert, Ben and Jack Willis visited the city last week to talk over the plans.

The final look of the statue, which will be one-and-a-fifth times life size, is still being decided. But it will capture the Scottie Road singer as she was in the early 1960s.

Speaking exclusively to the ECHO, Robert explained: â??We havenâ??t decided the final pose yet.

â??But we wanted to have something that was a fitting memorial, and something that was also for the people of Liverpool. Those are our two main motivators.

â??We were incredibly humbled and grateful for the way the city reacted on hearing about my mumâ??s passing, and obviously the funeral she had was amazing.

â??So we wanted to make a gesture of gratitude, and thatâ??s why we wanted to commission the statue, but we wanted it to be something for the people of the city as well as being a memorial to my mum.

â??Hopefully thatâ??s something that will be a positive addition to the city and something people will enjoy interacting with.â?*

The brothers were introduced to Emma Rodgers by presenter and ECHO columnist Pete Price, and have been working closely with Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson and the city to find the perfect location for the statue.

They also looked at the waterfront area, but chose Mathew Street because of its importance in the cityâ??s musical history and also in Cillaâ??s early career.

Robert says: â??I remembered whenever we filmed in Mathew Street, she always made a point of saying â??well thatâ??s not where the Cavern was, the original entrance was over thereâ??.

â??That original spot is marked with a plaque and a photo, but if you watch, especially the tourists, they donâ??t really stop there because they just see the new Cavern and go straight for that.

The original entrance to the Cavern was further down Mathew Street than the present one
â??So we felt given that my mum worked at the Cavern as well as performed there, she was on the staff as it were, the most fitting place for her statue would be something that would serve a purpose to mark the original entrance.

â??It would draw, hopefully, people to take a moment and reflect that this was where the Cavern originally was, and then go on and experience the Cavern as it is today.

â??Weâ??re thrilled to be honest. It works.â?*

As for their mum?

Ben says: â??Sheâ??s be made up.â?*

And Robert adds: â??The way her funeral was handled was something that she would be incredibly touched by, as we were.

â??Itâ??s not something you ever take for granted or expect. She never expected it, she never expected the way people reacted to her, the scale of it.

â??So I think sheâ??d ultimately be incredibly flattered that there would be a statue that becomes part of her home town.â?*

It is hoped the statue will be unveiled later this year.

The final look of the bronze statue is still to be decided â?? several different mini â??maquetteâ?? versions have been created.

But it will portray Cilla as a young woman in the early 1960s, with trademark bob and wearing a â??modâ?? dress.

Artists Emma Rodgers and Andy Edwards are working closely together to create the finished look â?? the first time the pair, who have known each other for a decade, have collaborated on a project.

They have been watching footage and reading interviews, as well as speaking to Cillaâ??s sons.

Emma, who is creating the body of the statue, said: â??Iâ??ve loved doing the research. She was such a strong woman, and itâ??s how she changed and adapted with the times. Itâ??s been really interesting discovering all the stories.

â??I love hiding a story within a form, so I was thinking â?? how could I interpret the stories within the piece? And how do we catch the character?

â??The dress will have text in the stitching from favourite songs, and there are square patchwork sections which will feature stories in them â?? notes, words and favourite sayings.

â??We might even have photography incorporated in it.â?*

And Andy, whose previous work includes the new Beatles statue on the Pier Head, will be responsible for the singer and TV presenterâ??s features.

He added: â??This is kind of addressing the female/male balance. Having enjoyed working on the Beatles, what was missing was the female side.

â??If Liverpool was the capital of the music world at one point, if not now, then the female side of that being Cilla really, she stands alone in that time.â?*
