Hair Love won Best Animated Short at the Academy Awards this year and like the film itself, its victory brings tears to the eyes.

Written and directed by former NFL pro Matthew A Cherry and produced by Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverseâ??s Karen Rupert Toliver, the heartwarming film tells the story of a black father struggling to do his daughterâ??s hair in preparation for a big occasion.

Doesnâ??t sound like a big deal on paper, but Cherryâ??s multi-layered stroke of genius tackles issues in such a relatable, engaging way that you have to take notice. In Toliver’s acceptance speech, she said that representation was at the heart of the movie:
“Representation matters deeply. Especially in cartoons because in cartoons it’s when we first see our movies and it’s how we shape our lives and think about how we see the world.”
Cherry added that they wanted to “normalise black hair”, and raise awareness of a new Californian law called the CROWN act (an acronym meaning â??Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hairâ?*).
He said, “If we can help to get this passed in all 50 states it will help stories like DeAndre Arnold’s stop to happen [sic].â?* He is, of course, talking about the 18 year old from Texas who was told to cut his hair or he wouldnâ??t be able to graduate.
Hair Love is told through the eyes of a young girl with a bodacious head of hair that she tussles with, trying to manipulate it into a style. When she fails â?? near to tears â?? her father steps in to tackle the locs and is seen battling her formidable ‘fro in a boxing ring only to be defeated.

A struggle you know all too well if youâ??re a part of the kinky-afro-hair brigade.
It would be easy to see this short as simply about the ‘difficult’ afro, but Cherry and Toliver have stowed away deeper messages.
Yes Hair Love challenges our understanding of afro hair, coming to the conclusion that it isn’t “difficult” but instead something that requires “a little bit of work and a whole lot of love” (ie patience) â?? a phrase drummed in throughout the film.
But it also takes a look at what beauty is, from the gorgeous, dark-skinned mother to the light-skinned father with dreads â?? a hairstyle too often associated with hardness and rebellion.
The way Cherry explores fatherhood in the black community is also to be commended. Where black fathers are often depicted as unaffectionate and disengaged, Hair Love breaks through that stereotype, in favour of black fathers being patient, caring and nurturing.
Welling up? Hold the hankies and cue the SPOILER alert, itâ??s about to get emotional.
It’s revealed at the end that the big occasion the father-daughter duo have been gearing up for is a visit to the hospital to see the daughterâ??s very sick mum. Having lost all of her hair (presumably through cancer), the mother receives a drawing from the brave little girl depicting a bald woman wearing a crown.
