</p> Wirral-born Shirley Ballas may be Strictly Come Dancingâ??s newest judge but she has a far more serious role away from the glitz and glamour of proffesional dancing.

As well as long career as one of the worldâ??s top dancers Shirley, 56, who was revealed this week as Len Goodmanâ??s replacement in the BBC1 ratings smash, runs The Ballas Foundation to prevent suicide and defeat the stigma associated with depression.

She set up the foundation, along with her son Dancing with the Stars professional Mark Ballas, following the death of her beloved brother David Rich.

Mr Rich, who grew up in Wallasey, took his own life in 2003 aged just 44, following a battle with depression.

In blog on Markâ??s website the tragic events which led to his uncleâ??s death are revealed.

It reads: â??In 2003, Shirley and Davidâ??s mother travelled to Northern England to help care for David after he became increasingly depressed. Mark, then 17, was scheduled to sing at St Paulâ??s in London.

â??Shirley invited her mother to see the performance â?? a one-day journey. That day was enough time for David, who was alone, to act on his depression and kill himself.

â??The family was not only left with overwhelming grief, but guilt. You keep thinking maybe you could have done something.â?*

David helped to raise Mark as well as his own daughter in the UK as Shirleyâ??s career took off in the US.

In 2012, on Davidâ??s birthday, Shirley said in an emotional Facebook post: â??He was an amazing man. Rest in Peace Dave. You are always close to my heart, your little sister. We all love you so much.â?*

Shirley used her 50th birthday party in September 2010 as a fundraiser to support suicide prevention schemes. Mark wrote and recorded a song, called All for Nothing, about his uncleâ??s tragic death, which featured آ*treasured family photos of David with Shirley.

A friend of Davidâ??s mum Audrey said: â??Shirley and her mum are such lovely, salt of the earth people. You can only imagine what they went through. It was so terribly sad.â?*
