'Iraqi crisis threat to region, world'

Baghdad, June 23 (IANS) Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki Monday told visiting US Secretary of State John Kerry that the crisis in his country was a threat to peace in the region and the world as well. "What is happening in Iraq poses a threat **t only to Iraq but to regional and global peace," Xinhua quoted Maliki as saying during a meeting with Kerry in Baghdad Green Zone. Kerry reiterated the US commitment to the protection of the security and independence of Iraq, as well as its support to the country in combating terrorism, represented by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant or ISIL, an Al Qaeda offshoot, the statement said. It also said that Kerry agreed that "Daash" (Arabic first letters of the ISIL) poses a menace to Iraq, the region and the world.
