PESHAWAR: The National Institute of Health (NIH) Islamabad has notified two new polio cases from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Thursday, government officials said.
The two new polio cases were reported from Lakki Marwat and Dera Ismail Khan, taking the provincial case count tally to 91 in 2019. The officials said the wild polioviruses have been isolated from a stool sample of nine months old girl from Baistkhel Union Council, Sarai Naurang subdivision of Lakki Marwat, and 24 months old boy child from Lachra Union Council in DI Khan.
The epidemiological study of the children shows that all children were zero dose for essential immunisation while their SIAs history is under investigation.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, particularly southern districts, has become a serious challenge to the national andinternational organisations engaged in the polio eradication programme. In the southern belt, some of the districts including Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Tank and Dera Ismail Khan reported a large number of polio cases last year.
Besides problems on the ground to the polio workers, numerous issues put a question mark on the performance of national and international organisations. The biggest issue is access to the children and overcoming the missed children. Also, misconception among parents about the polio vaccine and rumours against the polio programme are other major issues.
EOC KP Coordinator Abdul Basit said the virus is present in the environment and is hitting unvaccinated or immune-compromised children.“Even though the vaccine is available to prevent children from the diseases, parents are not vaccinating their children due to misconceptions and are responsible for the disability of the children,” he added. He said the only viable solution to the problem was to vaccinate children under five years of age.
