LAHORE: The proposal to massively increase gas tariff will lead to almost doubling the price of tandoori roti besides making a significant jump in the rate of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).The gas price increase is bound to unleash significant inflationary pressures, affecting all segments of consumers. This increase varies from one sector to another and goes all the way up to multiple times for certain segments including domestic consumers. A recent recommendation by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) to the government to increase gas prices is slated to swell the burden on consumers and all the sectors. According to the OGRA, gas prices for domestic gas consumers have been recommended to jack up by 214 per cent. The gas prices for tandoor will go up by 245 per cent, as gas bill has been proposed to be increased from Rs 100 to Rs 353 for the first two slabs. For users of 200 and 300 units, the gas rate has been increased from Rs 220 to Rs 707, and for 400 units users, the rate has been increased from Rs 700 to Rs 900. The gas regulator's proposal is stated to be implemented from January 1, 2020. Commenting on the worrisome development, Aftab Gill, an office-bearer of Lahore Naanbai Association, said the price of tandoori roti would be increased to Rs 12 from Rs 7, following an upward revision in gas tariff. Similarly, naan will be sold at Rs 20 instead of Rs 12. On the other hand, in commercial user category, gas for the CNG sector is to get 31pc more expensive. As per an estimate, the CNG cost may go up by Rs 24 per kg.Reacting to OGRA's proposal, Ghiyas Paracha of All Pakistan CNG Association expressed dismay over massive increase in gas tariff. There had been no such indication given by the regulator in the public hearing over gas tariff, he said, adding that such a high rise in gas rates is simply not acceptable. Not a single consumer category would bear such exorbitant fuel price hike, he observed. He said such a high rate of CNG wouldn’t be a viable option and would lead to closure of the entire industry. The increase in gas prices and resultant rise in the prices of many basic products is likely to compound the burden on the common man.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/com/cwEr/~4/6g_JRAmjT1E
