FBR extends income tax returns filing date till Dec 31

ISLAMABAD: After receiving tax returns of 1.9 million with paid up tax amount of Rs15.5 billion so far, the FBR has decided to grant another extension into the deadline of filing of income tax returns up to December 31, 2019.One top official of FBR on Monday night confirmed to The News that the date of filing of income tax returns extended to December 31, 2019. Till the last date of filing of income tax returns on December 16, 2019, the FBR received 1.9 million returns so far. The paid up tax amount along with 1.9 million returns fetched Rs15.5 billion tax amount into the national kitty.The FBR took decision to grant another extension because the FBR had received income tax returns up to 2.7 million in last financial year. Now the FBR is eyeing to cross this mark in the current fiscal year.However, the FBR must come up with clear cut strategy whether it will continue granting extensions or it is the last chance and there will be no further extension whatsoever if the tax machinery wants to give signal to potential taxpayers to avail this last chance.There should be some limit for granting extension and after expiry of upcoming extension there should be no further extension but the FBR will have to come up publicly on this issue.
