A new app in development could help people understand sign language in real time.

Students at Berghs School of Communication in Stockholm, Sweden are working with Google (http://mashable.com/category/google-translate/?utm_campaign=Mash-Prod-RSS-Feedburner-All-Partial&utm_cid=Mash-Prod-RSS-Feedburner-All-Partial&utm_medium=feed&utm_source=rss) to build an app that can translate sign language into speech. The team won an award (http://www.futurelions.com/) at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity for their work.

The app — called Google Gesture (http://add.berghs.se/case/google-gesture) — is paired with a band worn on the forearm that analyzes muscle movements made when signing — a process k**wn as electromyography. These movements are then sent to the app, which translates them into audible words as they are signed.
