With 2016 well underway, you may look at your smartphone and realize that someday soon, you may need or want a new smartphone but you don't have a spare $600 lying around. Until recently, phone makers only offered two solutions: bury the cost of a premium device in a monthly bill (i.e. "upgrading") or buy an off-brand device.
