What Am I Doing Here by Bruce Chatwin claims to be a travel book. It is. But it is also much more, since it contains miniature studies in character, historical vignettes, searches for myth and occasional biography as well. Bruce Chatwin's style is pithy, yet replete with finely-drawn image and vivid experience. And, like all experienced travel writers, the author is able to take the reader to the precise place he wants the experience to visit, whether that be a remote Himalayan mountain top, the street round the corner or the inside one's very own psyche.
