Truth has prevailed, finally: Abbasi

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Hanif Abbasi said on Saturday finally, truth has prevailed and Lahore High Court (LHC) decision was based on truth.He expressed these views while addressing party workers when he reached home in Satellite Town, Rawalpindi after his release from Lahore Camp Jail on Saturday.A large number of party workers including City Mayor Sardar Naseem and several other PML-N former MNAs and MPAs accorded a warm welcome of Hanif Abbasi on his arrival.During his address, he said, “We accept and respect court orders. Lifetime imprisonment was a court order, which I accepted. I will restart my politics to provide maximum relief to my people.” He said, “I will do each and every thing for Rawalpindi people.” He appreciated the role of PML-N supporters as they stood with him in time of trial.Abbasi was sentenced to life imprisonment which was suspended by the Lahore High Court on Thursday. The sentence was awarded in 2018 in the ephedrine quota case. A fine of Rs1 million was imposed on the PML-N leader along with the life sentence. Seven other accused were acquitted in the case.The ephedrine case surfaced in March 2011 as then federal minister Makhdoom Shahabuddin told the National Assembly that the government would investigate the alleged allocation of a quota for the production of 9000kg of ephedrine to two pharmaceutical companies — Berlex Lab International and Danas Pharmaceutical Limited. In June 2012, Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) had registered a case against nine suspects, including Hanif Abbasi.He was found guilty of selling 500kg of ephedrine to narcotics smugglers. He had obtained the controlled chemical for his company, Gray Pharmaceutical, in 2010.
