LONDON: A future customs union between the UK and EU would not deliver a “true Brexit”, according to Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt.He said people would view it as “curious” if the UK chose to give up power in areas of “vital” national interest when voters supported taking back control.His remarks came after the Commons rejected Conservative former chancellor Ken Clarke’s proposal for any Brexit deal to include a commitment to negotiate a “permanent and comprehensive UK-wide customs union with the EU” by 276 votes to 273, majority three.This was the smallest margin of defeat for the four Brexit alternatives considered as part of the second stage of the indicative vote process. Speaking at Foreign Office questions, Conservative former international trade minister Greg Hands said: “I know the Foreign Secretary and I will both welcome the House’s decision last night to reject an EU customs union.“Could he tell us what assessment he has made of the foreign policy implications of such an arrangement were it ever entered into?” Hunt replied: “I think people would see it as very curious that a country that voted to take back control is choosing to cede control in a number of areas of vital national interest.
