ISLAMABAD: Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry has clarified the government will not opt to change the name of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) just days after the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) strongly criticised reports that the government was considering the move.Chaudhry announced the decision following a cabinet meeting in Islamabad on Tuesday with Prime Minister Imran Khan in the chair, Radio Pakistan reported.Among the raft of decisions the cabinet arrived at were the formal approval to create a new Social Protection and Poverty Alleviation Division, a budget of Rs57.3 billion for Khassadars and other forces working in the erstwhile Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata).The cabinet also approved the decisions taken by the Economic Coordination Council (ECC) as well as the banning of airing Indian Premier League (IPL) matches in Pakistan.The new division will be headed by Dr Sania Nishtar and coordinate functions of various organisations under the newly-launched Ehsaas Programme. “Ehsaas envisages the provision of health cards and affordable housing facilities for low income people,” Chaudhry added.The Prime Minister also ordered the preparation of a complete roadmap on wheat, cotton, and rice as well as a procurement policy to benefit the agriculture sector. He said the cabinet has also decided to export one million tonnes of wheat. Khan also advised the cabinet to evolve a comprehensive policy to set vehicle prices.On the ban on IPL matches in Pakistan, the minister said: “India has left no opportunity to harm Pakistan’s cricket.” He said while sports, culture, and other showbiz activities should not be politicised, “India has adopted an aggressive posture against our players and artists”. He lamented that Indian broadcaster refused to broadcast PSL matches. “Now Pemra will ensure that IPL matches are not aired in Pakistan,” he added.New boards of directors (BoDs) of the Oil and Gas Development Company (OGDCL), Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC), Sui Northern Gas Company Limited (SNGPL) and Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation (PMDC) were also approved.Shamsuddin Ahmed Sheikh would be the new chairman of PMDC’s BoD. The OGDCL’s BoD would be headed by Qamar Javed Sharif. Dr Shamshad Akhtar would head the SSGC’s BoD and the SNGPL’s BoD would be chaired by Syed Dilawar Abbas. He said the cabinet approved appointment of Arshad Malik as the chief executive of Pakistan International Airlines.To a question about the 18th Amendment, he said some clauses of the law regarding higher education and health could be amended “if there is a political consensus on it”.
