The bottle: The Dalmore L’Anima Aged 49 Years (http://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/2019/dalmore-anima-bottura-l19711.html), price to be determined at auction
The backstory: In the world of single-malt Scotch, The Dalmore is a prized brand, with a history dating back nearly two centuries. And in the world of fine dining, the Italian chef Massimo Bottura is a living legend, with his Osteria Francescana restaurant in Modena having been named the world’s best in a 2018 survey (https://www.eater.com/worlds-50-best-restaurants-awards/2018/6/19/17475404/worlds-50-best-restaurants-2018-list-winners). (It won in 2016, too.)
So, what if such a whiskey label and such a chef joined forces? L’Anima is the result.
The bottle is literally a one-of-a-kind affair. That is, there is just one being produced, and it is up for auction at Sotheby’s through early May, with the proceeds going to benefit Bottura’s Food For Soul, a nonprofit organization that fights food waste. In case you’re interested, be forewarned: The minimum bid is $65,000.

Is the bottle worth it? Well, it does have some very rare liquid in it. L’Anima (which translates from the Italian as “The Soul”) is a blend of whisky from three different Dalmore casks, with the youngest of those clocking in at 49 years. The idea is to wed the whisky brand’s classic flavor profile, with its orange and chocolate notes, with Bottura’s inventive ideas about cuisine. Dalmore master distiller Richard Paterson and Bottura indeed worked together on the blend.
It’s hard to say how much the bottle will sell for, but rare whiskies are a booming business these days. Last year, a bottle of The Macallan, another beloved single-malt Scotch, sold for a record-breaking figure equivalent to around $1 million (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/10/03/bottle-scotch-fetches-world-record-price-848750/).
What we think about it: The Dalmore team offered members of the press and other invited guests the smallest of samples of L’Anima at a New York gathering a few weeks ago. Our take? Yup, this is one special whisky, with explosive orange-y flavors that linger in the mouth for a deliciously long time. Paterson rightly describes it as “full of warmth and completely unforgettable.”
How to enjoy it: If you can afford this whisky, we suggest enjoying it straight — perhaps complementing it with a trip to Bottura’s big-deal restaurant. But if you can’t afford it, you can always buy any of The Dalmore’s regular offerings. The Dalmore 12 costs $65, a bargain by comparison.
