LAHORE: Accountability Court Judge Najamul Hassan on Tuesday rejected NAB’s plea seeking extension in physical remand of PTI leader Aleem Khan and sent the accused to jail on judicial remand. The NAB officials produced Aleem Khan before the court amid tight security as heavy contingents of the law enforcement agencies had cordoned off the court premises and all routes leading to the court were blocked by placing containers. The NAB’s prosecutor implored the court to extend 15-day physical remand of the accused to carry out investigation. However, counsel of Aleem Khan opposed NAB’s plea arguing that NAB had failed to bring anything new in the case. He said that NAB was reiterating old arguments. Moreover, all the documents being shown by the NAB was provided by Aleem Khan himself, counsel added. He argued that for how long NAB could keep the custody of his client just on the basis of assumptions. He implored the court to reject NAB plea and send his client on judicial remand. The court after hearing the arguments of both parties sent Aleem Khan to jail on 15-day judicial remand. Interestingly, Aleem Khan has been sent to jail on judicial remand just after 30 days of his arrest as compared to PML-N leaders who spent an average 50 days in NAB custody before being granted judicial remand. As per details shared by the NAB on Aleem’s arrest on February 6, NAB claimed that the accused being the Secretary of “Park View Cooperative Housing Society”, member of the Provincial Assembly of Punjab and Minister for Information Technology held the “Public Office” as defined in Section 5(m)(iii) & (iv) of NAO,1999 and during the period accused has been involved in the acts of corruption and corrupt practices as defined under Section 9(a) of NAO,1999 by way of accumulating assets beyond known sources of income within Pakistan and abroad. Moreover, the accused established multiple companies with the purpose of real estate business and invested millions of rupees. Accused bought more than 900-kanal land in different Mauzas of Lahore in the name of his company M/s A&A Pvt. (Ltd) and also paid advances for additional 600-kanal land for which he could not account for the sources of the investments, the NAB added. The NAB stated that in year 2005 and 2006, apart from the inland assets, Aleem Khan established offshore companies in United Arab Emirates (UAE) and United Kingdom (UK). The offshore companies acquired assets of extensive value which are beyond known sources of income of the accused. The NAB stated that the arrest of the accused was necessary as it was likely that he might tamper with the prosecution evidence through coercion, criminal inducement and criminal intimidation. Moreover, his arrest was needed to unearth other assets which accused might hold in his ownership or in the ownership of his Benamidar and for the collection of evidence and concluding the inquiry / investigation in accordance with the law. Moreover, it has learnt that Aleem is also facing inquiries related to Park View Housing Society, River Age Housing Society, and properties at Multan Road. In January, 2018, NAB had sought the record of offshore companies reportedly established in Panama and other tax havens abroad by Aleem Khan and PML-Q's Chaudhry Moonis Elahi.A Mutual Legal Assistance report related to Khan's case was provided to NAB Lahore in January 2019 after which he was summoned for February 6 and arrested after he failed to satisfy investigators.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/com/cwEr/~4/7mhK-V50VDE
