The Jamaica Reggae Industry Association (JaRIA) will be handing out its annual honour awards this evening at Little Theatre in St Andrew.

The event recognises those who have made outstanding contributions to the development of the music industry, particularly those behind the scenes. The association has always stressed that this is an honour award and is not based on popularity, but rather based in service to the industry.

However, there are two awards in which the public is allowed to have an input — Breakthrough Artiste of the Year, and Song the Year.

According JaRIA chairman Ibo Cooper, these are the only the categories where the public decides, as the others are determined by a JaRIA committee.

“Voting will be open via our website right up till the start of the show. So not even I know who will win these two awards. Over the years there has been some controversy, especially with ‘Breakthrough Artiste’. But out track record shows that anyone who wins usually has a big year right after. Our winner last year was Koffee, and you can see how well she is doing. So we are encouraging persons to vote right up till the polls close at showtime,” he told the Jamaica Observer.

Nominees for Breakthrough Artiste of the Year are Lila Ike, Naomi Cowan, Jada Kingdom, Rygin King, and Teejay. Those up for Song of the Year are: Toast by Koffee; Wayne Marshall’s Glory to God; Flair is in the Air by Ding Dong; Kontraband by Kabaka Pyramid, featuring Damian Marley; No Guarantee by Protoje, featuring Chronixx; and Help The Weak by Capleton and Chronixx.

Up to press time, Montego Bay-based deejay Rygin King was leading in the Breakthrough Artiste category, while Koffee’s Toast was tops in the Song of the Year slot.

Meanwhile, Cooper said all is in place for tonight’s show at Little Theatre, which will feature a 30-piece orchestra.

“We are looking good. The rehearsals for the performances have gone well. The performers will include DBurnz, Guyanese Mark Barton, One Third and Serena Constantine. There will be musical tributes to Dennis Brown, Buju Banton, The I-Three, Grace Jones and Derrick Morgan. Warrior King will also be a special performer,” he said.

Among the honorees at this year’s event are Derrick Morgan, Donovan Germain, Dave Kelly, Winston Riley, Derrick Harriott, Eric Donaldson, Ruff Kutt Band, Tanya Stephens, George Nooks, and Sandra Brooks.
