A Hagerstown woman was charged with manslaughter and drug offenses this week after Frederick County sheriff’s deputies said she supplied the drugs that led to a fatal overdose in 2017, according to court records.

Briona Rae Davis, 23, who was listed as living in the 600 block of West Washington Street, was charged in a criminal indictment filed in Frederick County Circuit Court on Jan. 22, according to the records. She was taken into custody by Frederick County sheriff’s deputies at about 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, according to county detention center records. In addition to manslaughter, Davis was charged with distribution of both heroin and carfentanil, as well as charges relating to possession and possession with intent to distribute both heroin and carfentanil.آ*

The offense dates back to March 31, 2017, when sheriff’s deputies say Davis sold heroin to a 38-year-old Woodsboro man who later died from an overdose. It was later determined that carfentanil, a powerful synthetic opioid that is sometimes used as a tranquilizer for large animals, was mixed into the dose the man took, according to court records.

Davis was tearful as she pleaded with Judge Theresa M. Adams at a bail review hearing Wednesday afternoon in Frederick County Circuit Court, telling her she was struggling to overcome her addiction and distance herself from several prior criminal convictions.

“This has all just been brought to my attention. I’m distraught about this, too,” Davis said, having refused to be represented in the hearing by a public defender and opting instead to speak on her own behalf. “… I have been taking the initiative to get myself help.”

Davis told Adams she had been clean from heroin for a month and a half before her arrest.

Assistant State’s Attorney Colleen Swanson argued that Davis was well aware of what she was doing, citing several of the methods detectives used to confirm that Davis was responsible.آ*

“There are text messages back and forth between [Davis and the man] where she in fact warns him, ‘be careful, this is strong,'” Swanson said, arguing that Davis knew how dangerous the batch of drugs was.

Swanson also cited surveillance footage obtained by detectives placing Davis with the man shortly before his death, as well as Davis’ criminal record.

Adams agreed with Swanson and ordered Davis to remain held without bail in the Frederick County Adult Detention Center ahead of her next scheduled court appearance, a pretrial hearing set for March 18.
