COAL TOWNSHIP — Beth Wesloskie is the only student in 17 years of Mary Heim’s cosmetology class at Northumberland County Career and Technology Center (NCCTC) to receive her cosmetology license while still in the high school program.
Wesloskie, 18, a senior from Mount Carmel Area School District, finished her cosmetology training in under three years, which was only possible because of good attendance and her diligence to finish early. She arranged cyber school to complete her curriculum requirements, and passed her cosmetology state board exam in December 2018, making her a licensed cosmetologist before she even graduates later this year.
“I always wanted to be a cosmologist since I was little. I just like to make people feel good,” said Wesloskie, her hair streaked with a vivid blue, at the school in Coal Township.
Wesloskie also worked days off and weekends at Marionette Company in Shamokin, and was eligible to participate in Regis Corp’s Stylist in Training at the Buckhorn Plaza. She has accepted a position with Holiday Hair in Buckhorn.
Wesloskie said she is a member of the art club, and she especially likes working with color and makeup. Her ultimate goal is to become a cosmetology teacher, she said.
Heim, the instructor of the program for the last 17 years, said she is proud of Wesloskie.
“She has shown her creativity, she has an ability to see things, imagine them and then put them on heads, especially with her interest in color placement,” Heim said. “Beth wears all kinds of fantasy colors, the fashion colors, that the younger generation is into.”
The cosmetology program at the NCCTC, located in Coal Township, allows members of the public to act as practice for the students. Mary Eby, of Shamokin, came in last week to dye her eyebrows and hair, and get a haircut, but she said she often comes in for other acts.
“Beth is great at everything,” Eby said. “Since I’ve been coming here, she’s blossomed from a shy, quiet girl to someone who came out of their shell, and into a mature confident woman. I’m very proud of her.”
The Center, located at 1700-2000 W. Montgomery St., serves students in Line Mountain, Mount Carmel Area and Shamokin Area school districts. Eleven programs are offered: culinary arts, auto mechanics, collision repair, health occupations, occupational childhood care, protection services, welding, carpentry, electrical construction, heating ventilation and air conditioning and cosmetology.
