GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. â??آ*</p>Gov. Gretchen Whitmer shared her opinion on the government shutdown at a Whitmer Winter Warm Up (https://wwmt.com/news/local/inauguration-events-abound-throughout-state-on-news-years-day?fbclid=IwAR1XTuMZCs1DaBpAA_tFNCoK6NfRiPA9dtd8X p3iajmdf1zY1Y9lbKd7338) event held at the Grand Rapids Public Museum Saturday, Jan. 26. She said her cabinet worked overtime to ensure resources for critical things, like food assistance.

Whitmer said with congress on another deadline, we can’t go into another shutdown. Although, she said Michigan is prepared if we do.

“I’m calling on Congress and the President to come together and solve these problems so we don’t throw the whole chaos again. It’s sad that we’re where we are,” Whitmer said.

She said she’s going to be the governor for everyone, including the children of Michigan.

“Literacy is one of the things we’ve got to really work on. It’s important to me as someone who’s a product of the public schools in the Grand Rapids area. A mom of kids in public schools in East Lansing. I’m appalled. Our kids deserve better. When you don’t invest in the education of our children it’s what contributes to the skills we have to meet in the states,” Whitmer said.

She said there’s several issues, like education, which should allow for the two parties to come together.

“I talk about the Mackinac Bridge as such a symbol of our legacy. Problem solving. Two parties came together, connected two peninsulas, strengthened our economy and that’s what we need to show the world what real leadership looks like. It’s going to take every one of us to be a part of this. “

Whitmer mentioned potholes as another partisan issue. She hinted she’d release more information on roads during the State of the State on Feb. 5.
