GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. â?? Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist played host to â??Whitmer Winter Warm-upâ?* at the Grand Rapids Public Museum.آ*
The duo brought in hundreds of attendees to the free event.آ*
Lines ran from one end of the museum to the other, with people waiting to snap a photo with the leaders or discuss issues facing the state.آ*
Roshawn Gillon said he came to talk to Whitmer about what she plans on doing to help employment opportunities and the water crisis in Flint.
آ*â??I havenâ??t heard much about what their plan is moving Michigan forward,â?* Gillon said.
During a media conference, Gov. Whitmer said she was appalled by Michiganâ??s current educational status.آ*
â??Our kids deserve better, and when you donâ??t invest in the education of our children itâ??s what contributes to the skills gap that we have to meet in this state, so that we can increase household incomes, and make Michigan a great place to raise a family,â?* Gov. Whitmer said.
In accordance with her education initiative, the museum encouraged guests to donate a new or gently-used book to the museum upon entry to the event, which included free face-painting and balloon animals, among other perks.
Gov. Whitmer also referenced her campaign vow to fix Michigan roads.
â??Potholes are not partisan. Our kidsâ?? education, our schools are not partisan. This is about every one of us, and weâ??re going to show the world what it looks like to solve problems,â?* she said.آ*
Whitmer is slated to outline her road proposal on Feb. 5. While Lansing sources suspect the money for road work will come from shifting sales tax on gas, Whitmer has not confirmed.
Gov. Whitmer said that amid animosity in the government, she wants to set aside differences for issues that affect all people.
آ*â??This is about making our government work for everyone in the state. Iâ??m going to be a governor to everyone, and weâ??re going to start solving problems,â?* said Gov. Whitmer.
