Chandigarh: A 43-year-old man, who was arrested in a murder case last month, committed suicide by hanging himself in his barrack in Sonipat Central Jail. His dead body was found hanging from the angle irons of the window frame of a toilet in jail barrack.</p>Police said his body was handed over to his family after magisterial inquest conducted under the supervision of Sarvpreet Kaur, the duty magistrate.
Deceased was identified as Surender Singh, a resident of Khanpur Kalan village. On December 25, 2018, he was arrested for murder of a woman living near his house.
The suicide became known on Sunday morning when jail staffers were inspecting the barrack. A guard had first peeped into his barrack but as he could not spot Surender, he opened the door and found him hanging with a piece of cloth tied from the widow frame.
The jail guards staffers informed the senior authorities and who informed the local court as well as the police.
Investigating officer sub-inspector Phool Kumar said that no suicide note was recovered from him or from the barrack. “We had recorded the statements of his family members. The inquest proceedings are under way,” he added.
