Applied Tissue Technologies, based in*Hingham, MA, won FDA clearance for its*Platform Wound Dressing (PWD), the first embossed negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) device that doesn’t require using any foam or gauze.

The PWD has an adhesive base and an embossed membrane that keeps the wound isolated from the outside environment. The membrane, thanks to its unique design, ends up performing the functions of the foam or gauze that’s currently used with existing NPWT products.
The device is transparent when looking from above, allowing for close monitoring of the wound during therapy. When it is activated, the membrane is sucked toward the wound to come in direct and intimate contact with it. Because of the 3D pattern of the membrane, the device allows fluids and air to penetrate to the wound surface while still maintaining a low pressure around the wound.
