I keep my happy hacker horse at a smallish yard (12 horses). There are only 3 horses at the yard ridden with any degree of regularly - a couple are retired, a couple are youngers and the rest just don't get ridden. The hacking at my yard is amazing - mix of quiet country lanes and some forestry tracks. The other people that ride tend to do the same out and back route so I'm always hacking alone and that isn't going to change (I have tried to encourage some others to ride but keep getting let down at the last minute).Thankfully, my horse is beyond bombproof so I am happy going out alone. The furthest we've ventured so far is about 5k - I was gradually building up but then the heatwave came along with the flies/horse flies so hacks have been less pleasant and therefore shorter.I took a drive round one of the routes I want to do this summer and it's so nice - quiet, leafy lanes. I just need a kick up the bum to go and do it! There is a short section of road that, although rarely busy is a bit twisty and cars do go fast on it but it's literally, 0.2 miles and it's very wide so plenty of room. I just have a niggle that if something happened and she got loose on that road it would be a disaster - she's never even spooked in the 6 months I've had her so it's unlikely but I've never really hacked out that sort of distance on my own before. There is also a section cutting through a section of the village centre which can be a bit busier with lots of parked cars but that worries me a bit less. So, my fellow happy hackers, please inspire/motivate, reassure me that I'll be fine and I'll enjoy some lovely chill out time with my pony!
