I'm pretty sure choosing the right livery yard or not being happy at your current one is a big thing to most people who doesn't keep their horses at home. I was previously at a livery yard for 5 years and all was good until the YO suddenly decided (and it got worse over the years) they'd be in pretty much ALL winter as they didn't like the fields getting muddy so eventually found somewhere (not kidding you, I viewed over 10 yards) and eventually we moved January 2017, so much stuff it took 5 days. I ride a lot, out in my box most weekends to events. I’ve not found the perfect yard ever.. does it even exist?! I think I’ve viewed every yard within the 10 mile radius. Current place isn’t perfect (where is?!) -All year turnout-Floodlit arena but lighting is very poor in winter-Stables-Good grazing so the horses are happy which is the main thing-We can ride in 4 open fields in summer -I buy in my own hay, perfect, as get it very cheap being a farmers daughterDrawbacks-Only allowed to use buckets of water-Fencing not good, go through lots of rugs-No dogs allowed- 15 minutes drive - Mixed herd, had quite a few injuries previously- Stabled separately to each other (4 stable blocks) which is a bit of a pain-The amount of grazing.. we have lots of grass for 6 horses (above knees) and it really isn't any good for my good doer so been muzzled all summer. Can’t have our own paddocks. - Have to bring them in daily due to so much grazing-The hacking isn’t great, about a hours hack to a field -No one else rides, so always riding on my own so feel like I’ve lost my mojo with not much to talk about but the horses seem really happy. I am torn what to do because I have been offered 2 stabled next to each other at home (we rent a cottage with stables opposite)- Stabled next to each other- HOSE PIPE- all year but controlled grazing – not constantly paranoid they’re fat-Being at home (for now until we get a mortgage) so It would save me quite a bit of time traveling- Dog friendly (dogs could also come with me if riding around their land)- All new ‘horse’ fencing or all electric fenced- Floodlit arena- I get on well already with the liveries- Pretty much do it yourself, no involvement from YO- They have a small private woodland and 2 fields to ride in with jumps- You get given your own 2 decent sized fields for summer and winter, you can do what you like with them. - All of the ladies ride, one events and regularly goes to clinics and quite a few hunt, which would be great to get into and I’d possibly have someone to ride with!- Very close to motorway and good places to box to and hack/hireDrawbacks..- The yard is in between 3 very busy roads so hacking limited but if you cross the main road, there is very good country hacking the other side of it down a track and some decent long rides but means no riding and leading.- Deep arena surface- Poo picking- If we ever move/get a mortgage it will be more of a drive to this yard- Not much natural shelter and on top a hill so much colder than other yard- May not have enough grazing.. - The horses there are always at the gate or not far from it, they all look healthy but a friend said this could be because they aren’t happy.. :Z- More expensive by approx. £30 a month in summer and approx. £50 a month in winter. My main thing is that the horses are happy where they are currently.. well apart from one having to wear a muzzle and don’t want to disturb them BUT for now it would be easier to keep them on the doorstep and part of me thinks next year if we move I may have to move them closer to home anyway. I really don’t know what to do and am absolutely torn. Can anyone help as a ‘outsider’?
